First of all, let me introduce myself. My handle’s DZeroX, and I’m an avid TF2 player, just like misfit-zero here. The other day, when I read misfit’s post about how he was looking for guest authors, I couldn’t resist the temptation to apply for one of the spots, simply because, I enjoy TF2 a lot, and there are good servers out there that people should know about. I’m not a seasoned writer, so I have to tell you right away that my reviews aren’t going to be as juicy and spectacular like misfit’s. Still, I hope you enjoy my pieces on the different servers, and that you too, will enjoy the servers themselves.

As an raving fan of arena, I’m always on the lookout here and there for arena servers, but it’s always difficult to find one that’s constantly filled up and/or has a decent skill level (not that I’m that good either.) Nevertheless, I managed to find THE arena server. Yes, THE one. A consistently populated one, full Valve rotation, and with great players to boot it off.

Most players, and I use the term “most” loosely, hate arena, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the fact that you only have one life, or because it’s difficult to get health while playing, or just because it requires a fair bit of skill to survive the carnage, I don’t know. Still, there’s a great amount of people who are fans of this mode, and they know that finding a good arena server is indeed hard.

So, I jump in, expecting no one to be actually connected, a feeling acquired by joining one-too-many servers with fake players count, and instead, I’m in middle of war. Rockets flying, bombs exploding, flames burning, <insert weapon-action here>. I start playing… and boy, it’s fun! Everybody’s talking to each other, discussing strategies, giving advice, all in the spirit of winning that one round. When we win, it’s a celebration, everyone cheers, and when we lose, it’s all about making fun of each other’s death. Everybody in the teams look out for each other, and

But, it’s not always fun-and-games. Like every other public server, there’s bound to be a small portion of players who join just to make a mess of the game, and SourceOP is no exception. Although quite rare, there is people who love micspamming songs, others, who mock and insult others for making mistakes, so don’t expect this server to be a slice of Heaven on Earth. Also, the fact that this server is constantly populated means that you will have trouble getting in during peak hours. During off-hours though, you’ll be able to get in nicely, and still enjoy a large amount of players to play with.

Now, regarding their website, at first glance, it doesn’t really seem like a website fit for a community that runs gaming server, because actually, SourceOP’s main focus is the maintenance and development of a plugin with this same name. But, once you venture into the forums, you can see the sections that discuss the different servers. The problem is that the sections are too general (only 2 sections for the servers, General Chat and Problems/Help.) It would be better if the boards were spread out a bit more, so it would be more appealing for those who would also like to be part of the community.

In spite of all the bad things mentioned, this is the perfect arena server. I’ve reached this conclusion after more than 50 hours spent playing here. I love it there, and trust me, I’ll be playing there again. See you in-game :)
